Thank you for the fascinating history of His Majesty Karaganda! I can’t believe he went from almost not surviving his first winter to being the oldest manul in the world! We’re so lucky to have him and all his manul descendants. And seeing pictures of him as a kitten… 
(Also it’s funny, I’d seen him called “pirate” so often I just assumed “Karaganda” was probably Russian for “pirate”. Guess I was very wrong about that! 
)

Btw Pirate in russian will be almost the same - Пират (Pirat)

The article on Karaganda was wonderful, there was so much fascinating history! Thank you for writing it. So many of the manuls I love are his descendants, and to hear about how he came in from the wild was really heart-warming!

Dear Roman and Vika, first of all I would like to express my gratitude and respect for what you do for the Pallas’s cats. Informing people about them and their fragile nature is very important, education and spreading awareness is part of making their lives easier.
I would like to ask if there is anything that can be done about the poor grandpa Karaganda - I saw this video and it brakes my heart. He’s very old, he has trouble walking, he looks so slim. Isn’t there a way to make his life a bit better, relocate him to a part of the zoo unavailable for the visitors, where he would’ve had more warmth, more food and so on? He deserves it 
Please don’t take it wrong that I’m writing about it, I just think that your voice might be heard in the Novosybirsk Zoo

The poor sweet old man. I just want to wrap him up in a blanket and rub his stiff joints. 
I hope the zoo is doing everything it can for him.

Poor guy, this time of year can’t be good for an old man like him, especially where it gets that cold. I hope that the zoo would do something like is done for Tabby, where she is off to the side to enjoy her retirement with no visitors. It is sad to see him trying to avoid the snow

I know, it breaks my heart manuls are good with very low temperatures but I guess it applies to young and healthy ones, not a 15 y.o. senior who has trouble walking

True! I trust the zoo staff knows best for him, but it’s still sad to see him looking so old. Of course he only looks so old because he’s had such a long and incredible manul life. Still I want him to be strong forever even if I know that’s impossible.

The way he is walking, he limps, he seems to be fatigued 
I’m surprised that he’s still on exhibition. Tabby for example is in a private part of the SCZ because of her age. Good that Karaganda gets his food chopped into small pieces.

Караганда выглядит действительно старым, потому что… он старый. И он хромает, потому что у него уже очень давно проблема с лапками. Увы, это не то, что можно исправить.
Вы правы, Табби живёт вне экспозиции, но однако надо принять во внимание и тот факт, что в японских зоопарках другая концепция и манулы в рабочее время зоопарков не имеют доступа к укрытию и всегда на виду.
В Новосибирском зоопарке (и во всех российских и, пожалуй, всех европейских, в которых мы были) манул может в любое время уйти в укрытие и вообще не выходить на публику хоть целыми днями.
Караганду никто не заставляет выходить, однако он выходит сам и вообще достаточно активен. Обходит свою территорию, смотрит по сторонам, наблюдает за киперами, по настроению слушает и реагирует на посетителей и, если посчитает нужным, защищает свою территорию. А в брачный период ещё и разговаривает с соседками.
Всё это поддерживает в нём жизненный тонус.
Видели ли вы когда-нибудь скучающее животное в зоопарке, которое не интересует ни еда, ни территория, ни размножение? Никогда не пожелаю этого ни Караганде и никакому другому животному.
Почему вам кажется, что в закрытой части зоопарка вне экспозиции ему будет лучше?
Друзья, я понимаю ваши переживания и желания всего самого лучшего для Караганды. Мы точно также как вы хотим, чтобы Караганда был в здравии и жил долго. Мы очень его любим. И поэтому я рада, что Новосибирский зоопарк не переводит Караганду на задний двор, как это делают некоторые зоопарки со старыми животными, потому что они выглядят «непрезентабельно», а обеспечивают ему привычные для него условия жизни. И специально только для него мелко режут мяско, как вы верно подметили.

It’s a good point that moving Karaganda could be it’s own source of stress for him. Needing to get used to a new home at his age would surely be difficult. I’m sure he has everything perfectly arranged to his specifications at this point!
He reminds me of my house cat when he was 18-19. Very slow and very stiff but still happily did all his usual things, just not as quickly.
