Manul in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition

The Natural History Museum in London sponsors and hosts the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. The 2024-5 competition was its 60th Anniversary, and the winning photographs are still being exhibited there until the end of June.

I went to see the exhibition last week. They have 100 photos displayed through several rooms, printed large and backlit. The categories include themes like Animals in their Environment, Plants & Fungi, and Under Water, and there are a few age-related categories too.

I say all this because there is a manul among the awarded photographs! (Obviously my phone photo doesn’t do it justice!)

The entry was Highly Commended in the Behaviour: Mammals category. It’s not the first time there’s been a manul photo in the competition, but I particularly like this one. The dedication it took to track the cats for so long and in such harsh conditions is inspiring, and the photo itself is the kind of manul drama you could only see in the wild.

If you can make it to the exhibition before it closes on 29 June then I highly recommend it – all the awarded photos are incredible!

And it’s also on tour around the world so there might be somewhere closer than London that you could visit: Where to see the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition | Natural History Museum

If you can’t make it, they also have an online gallery (it’s not currently working for me but you might have better luck): Online Gallery.

And finally, if you like the photo, they’re also selling prints at a range of sizes and canvas types, so you can keep this award-winning manul in your home!

What an awesome manul photo!!
I saw the online gallery and other photos are also great :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
It’s a pity they don’t have a plan to come to Japan right now

Anyway, thank you for the report and the information

That shot is absolutely stunning! Everything about it looks so intentional, even though it’s a wildlife photograph! It surely deserves the award!!

Another manul photo that won – back in 2020 – was this one:

Like all these wildlife photos it seems to have taken a lot of patience, and I’m very glad the photographer had so much dedication!

Again, it won in the Behaviour: Mammals category – I think maybe the drama of manul life makes them well-suited to that theme!

You can read a little more about it here.

Mamanul and her minuls! I’d personally fight the ones responsible for choosing the winner if that one didn’t win! (/jk)

Haha! It won in its category, so the organisers are safe from your fury (for now)!
